Frederick Keys News Release

After dropping two of three at Myrtle Beach less than a week ago, the Frederick Keys have returned the favor to the Pelicans. The Keys defeated the Pelicans on Saturday night 5-3, taking the first two contests of a three-game set.

Frederick 1B Brandon Waring got the Keys on the scoreboard in the second. The slugger blasted his 26th homerun of the season, a solo shot to left, giving Frederick a 1-0 lead.

The Pelicans began tied the game and took the lead in the fourth. With two men down, LF Cody Johnson drilled a solo homerun to dead center field, tying the contest. Myrtle Beach wasn't done. DH Gerry Rodriguez, C Jesus Sucre and RF Jon Mark Owings hit back-to-back-to-back singles, knocking in a run, and making it 2-1.

That's all the Pelicans would get against Frederick RHP Kenny Moreland. He went 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, while striking out five.

The Keys made sure Moreland would leave with a lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Frederick loaded the bases for 3B Tyler Henson. He lifted a sac fly to center field, tying the game at two. C Wally Crancer then singled into center, knocking in another run, and giving the Keys a 3-2 lead.

Frederick got a little breathing room in the seventh. With one on and two out, 2B Buck Britton struck an RBI-double to left, making it 4-2. The Keys then loaded the bases for Henson. He worked a walk, knocking in Britton, and making it 5-2.

In the eighth, Myrtle Beach scored once again. Johnson drilled his second homer of the game, making it 5-3.

Moreland (4-1) got the win for Frederick. LHP Chad Rodgers (0-1) surrendered two runs in an inning of work, taking the loss. RHP Brandon Cooney pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the season.

The Keys and the Pelicans will play the finale of this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM. For ticket info, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
