Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

FREDERICK, MD - After bouncing back from another early deficit, the Pelicans couldn't hold the lead and dropped their fifth straight with a 5-3 loss to the Frederick Keys Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Cody Johnson hit a pair of solo home runs to take the Minor League Baseball lead with 32 big flys on the season.

Pelican starter Jacob Thompson pitched well over his five innings as he allowed just one run, a solo home run in the second by Brandon Waring, on three hits. He also struck out seven and walked just two but didn't record a decision despite leaving with a 2-1 lead.

The Pelicans staked Thompson to the lead with two runs in the fourth. Johnson blasted his first of two homers with the bases empty and two men out to tie the game at one. Then, the Pelicans rallied with two outs to claim the lead using three straight singles. Jon Mark Owings was the last of the three and his hit plated Gerry Rodriguez to put the Pelicans in front.

Frederick tied it and took the lead in the sixth inning off Chad Rodgers who was just activated off the disabled list prior to the game. Matt Angle scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Henson, and Robbie Widlansky scored the go-ahead run on a Wally Crancer single. Rodgers (0-1) was tagged with the loss in his 2009 Pelicans debut.

The Keys added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh off Rudy Darrow. Buck Britton doubled home Bobby Stevens and Britton scored on a bases loaded walk to Henson to put the Keys up 5-2.

Johnson's second home run of the game came in the eighth and that would be all the Birds would get as the Keys' bullpen held off a ninth inning threat by the Pelicans.

Kenny Moreland picked up the win allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings. Brandon Cooney pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon when the Pelicans send lefty Cole Rohrbough to the mound against fellow lefty Zach Britton. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 at Harry Grove Stadium.
