Tri-City Storm News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - In a back and forth affair Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center, the Des Moines Buccaneers (25-32-4) prevailed, scoring two late third period goals and defeated the Tri-City Storm (22-33-7) by a score of 4-3.
The Storm's top line of Trevor Moore, Michael Vecchione and Brian Ward each picked up two points in defeat, while defenseman Nolan Gluchowski added a power play goal.
Tri-City outshot Des Moines 39-22 and had scoring chances throughout, but had to overcome two early Buccaneer leads before going ahead in the final period.
Des Moines scored the first goal of the game 6:38 into the contest when Patrick Grasso one-timed a pass from Danial Elser past Storm goaltender Justin Quale.
Tri-City tied the game just over two minutes later when Vecchione found Moore at the right circle. The left wing put the puck into the top shelf of the net for goal No. 20 on the season and made it 1-1.
In the second the Buccaneers took a lead once again, this time on a shot by defenseman Garrett Cockerill from the high slot.
But the Storm evened the game at 2-2 with a power play tally from Gluchowski. The defenseman got a pass from Ward and beat Des Moines goaltender Billy Christopoulos with a shot from the point for his seventh goal of the season.
Vecchione pushed the Storm out in front in the third, scoring his twenty-fourth goal of the season to make it 3-2. The Saugus, Mass. native got help from his linemates as Moore started the play and Ward found his right wing in front. Vecchione used his backhand to shovel the puck into the net and give Tri-City the lead.
Late penalties doomed the Storm as they allowed two goals in the final half in the third to Cockerill and Axel Wemmenborn. Tri-City couldn't get back into the game and fell to Des Moines 4-3.
Quale made 18 saves for the Storm while Christopoulos made 36 stops and picked up the win for the Buccaneers.
Tri-City will play a home-and-home with the Lincoln Stars in the final weekend of the USHL regular season next weekend. The Storm will travel to Lincoln on Friday night before hosting the Stars on Saturday in Kearney. Both games will start at 7:05 p.m.
