Indiana Ice News Release
Three goals is what it took for the Indiana Ice to earn a 3-2 victory over Team USA Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The three scoring shots did not travel a combined distance of 20 feet.
Mitch Hults scored the game-winner one minute before the final horn on a tap-in of a Joshua Jacobs' wrist-shot. When Jacob's shot leaked behind U-17 goalie Hunter Miska and rode the goal-line before Hults charged the loose puck.
"Coach Jeff Brown has stressed putting the puck on net and crashing it," commented Hults. "The puck was loose and kicked behind the goalie and I crashed from the corner to get to it."
Mikhail Plotnikov earned a two-point night with an assist on the play with 60 ticks remaining on the clock to go along with his first period goal.
The Ice could not make a pair of one-goal leads stand up through two periods. Despite skating without a shot on goal the first five minutes of the contest, Indy got on the board 11:34 after the opening puck drop.
Plotnikov benefited from a hard drive to the net by his line-mate Canon Pieper. Pieper's point-blank shot in the crease created a rebound opportunity and the Russian deposited his 19th goal of the season. Defenseman Joe Fiala set the scoring play in motion when he fed Pieper.
Indiana limited Team USA to five shots on goal halfway through the contest, but the visitors tied it up at 1-1 after Nolan Steven received a drop pass in the Ice goal crease from Sonny Milano at 12:12 of the middle session.
Lukas Laub regained the host's lead when he attacked the net from the left face-off circle. Miska could not fight off the shot attempt at 15:58 of the second period. Joseph Widmar and Jake Cass earned assists on the play.
The lead only stood up 33 seconds when Anders Bjork found net on the long rebound of Ryan Hitchcock's shot on goal.
Anderson Snair earned the win in net stopping all but two of the visitor's 20 shots.
Indy finished the season 4-0-0 against the U-17's and faces a difficult matchup Sunday against the Youngstown Phantoms. The puck drops at 3:05.
