Toledo Walleye News Release

TOLEDO - The Lucas County Arena was rocking while hosting its first school day game. The 10:30 morning contest against Kalamazoo held 5,759 enthusiastic Walleye fans from schools around the area. The electric atmosphere was fitting for the high-scoring affair.

Both teams were aggressive from the start, but the K-Wings jumped to the early lead - immediately. With 1:04 off the clock, C Darryl Lloyd knocked home the game's first goal. Minutes later, Kalamazoo C Mathieu Curadeau scored for a Wings' 2-0 lead. Toledo answered later with a score from D Jonathan Carlsson, his first professional goal in his first game for the Walleye. However, the home team would trail 3-1 to end the period.

The second period was all about the fish as they outplayed Kalamazoo in every aspect of play. Maxime Tanguay shot the puck from behind the net, which bounced over the crossbar, and rolled off the back of goalie Ryan Nie, cutting the deficit to one. Toledo would then benefit from four Wings' penalties in the period, and took advantage with a pair of goals.

With the man advantage, Maxime Tanguay centered a perfectly placed pass through the crease and a pair of defenders to Adam Hobson, who buried it home to tie the game. Later in the second, Justin Hodgman threw a beautiful pass in front to Dominic Osman, who one-timed the tip-in for the 4-3 Walleye lead.

In the third period, Kalamazoo again squared the score. On an odd-man rush, Kalamazoo had Sam Ftorek crashing to the net and flipped it to Trent Daavettila, who tipped it in for the score to force overtime.

Halfway through the extra period, a broken play at the K-Wings' blue line proved costly. Evan Rankin found a loose puck at the line, tip-toed around two defenders to the open ice in front of the crease, and hit a hard wrist shot over the glove of Nie into the back of the net. The Walleye won in overtime, 5-4.
