Walla Walla Drops Game One Behind Inability to "Manufacture Runs"
July 1, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Walla Walla, Wa- The Sweets dropped a tough first game to the Wenatchee Applesox, 5-4. Walla Walla banged out 12 hits and was helped out by four errors by the Applesox, but left 10 runners on base.
Wenatchee found the scoreboard first in the second. After singling and moving over to third, Nick Nyquist came across the plate on a wild pitch.
The Sweets would come back to take the lead in the bottom half. Parker Coss singled to start off the inning and Dylan Wilbert followed that with a single of his own. With runners on first and second, Juan Gamez lined a ball of the left field wall to bring in Coss and Wilbert was nailed at the plate. Gamez moved to third on the throw and he was knocked in on a sacrifice fly by Matt Whitney. That made the score 2-1 with the Sweets on top.
In the top of the third, the Applesox would snag the lead right back. They put up three runs, including one by Nyquist, who stole home on a double steal.
The Sweets tied it up in the bottom half at four a piece. Jon Hechtner led things off with a single and advanced to third with two outs. The catcher for the Applesox, Erik Sauve, tossed the ball over the head of the pitcher after a pitch and that allowed Hechtner to come in to score. Kyle Nixon would single after that and he would score on an RBI double by Wilbert two batters later.
The Applesox scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on an RBI single by Sauve and score would stay at 5-4.
The Sweets saw an excellent relief performance from Alex Fisher. He went 3.1 innings, only giving up one hit and walking two while striking out four. Manager Frank Mutz said that he "really picked up the pace for us" and that his outing and Micah Gorman's were huge, even though they could not pick up the win.
Game two of the series will be tomorrow at 7:05 pm at Borleske Stadium.
