Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Josh Wall had his best outing of the season, pitching a no-hitter into the sixth and allowing just one run over seven innings en route to a 4-1 Sixers win over the High Desert Mavericks Saturday night.
Wall (4-8, 5.91) retired the first 13 batters he faced before walking Alex Liddi in the fifth to break the streak. It wasn't until Juan Diaz blasted a soaring homer to right with one out in the sixth that Wall allowed a hit. In his 7 innings of work, Wall allowed 1 run on 2 hits and a walk while striking out 3.
Diaz's home run and a single by Carlos Peguero were the only two hits the Mavericks recorded all night. The hit total of two is the lowest High Desert has had on the season thus far.
Inland Empire scored first in the third when Elian Herrera reached second on a throwing error by the shortstop Diaz that sailed out of play. Herrera then stole third and was driven in on a sac fly to right by Scott Van Slyke for his team-leading 96th RBI.
High Desert starter Jake Wild pitched himself into some trouble in the fifth. With two out and Justin Fuller on second, Wild proceeded to hit Herrera and issue back-to-back walks to Van Slyke and Andres Perez to bring a run home.
With the Sixers clinging to a 2-1 lead in the seventh and Justin Fuller on first, the rehabbing Doug Mientkiewicz gave his team some cushion, depositing a 3-1 offering from Travis Mortimore over the netting in right field and onto E Street to extend the lead to 4-1. Mientkiewicz was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in and two strikeouts.
David Pfeiffer pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief to pick up his fourth save.
Wild (6-8, 4.13) gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits and 5 walks while fanning 3 through 6 innings for the loss.
The Sixers remain two games behind Rancho Cucamonga for the last wild card spot after the Quakes beat Stockton 3-1.
