Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Valley Pippins dished out nine walks, leading to extra opportunities for the Kelowna Falcons as the Pippins fell short, 9-2, in Sunday night's series finale at Yakima County Stadium.
Andrew Bernstein (Cal Poly Slo) earned the loss allowing six runs, five earned, over six innings of work - tying his entire season total with four walks. Kelowna scored runs in each of the first two innings, both rallies taking place with two outs, earning an early 3-0 lead.
Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the 5th, Jack Sandberg (San Diego) delivered an RBI single scoring his college teammate Jay Schuyler, who also doubled later in the 7th inning. The Yakima Valley Pippins (29-19, 14-7) struggled to get anything going against Kelowna starting pitcher Jake Simmons, who pitched a complete game allowing one earned run.
Kelowna would then add two more runs in the 6th inning on a 2-out situation before the Pippins would respond with one of their own, an RBI groundout from Trevor Achenbach (Oklahoma Wesleyan). Freddy Smith (Cal State Northridge) led the charge offensively finishing 2-4 at the plate, scoring that second run, closing out the series with nine hits.
Connor Lau (Central Washington) gave up zero runs over 1.2 innings of work, extending his scoreless streak to seven innings. After escaping a jam left by Lau in the 8th inning, Matt Fish (Lewis-Clark State College) then issued three walks in the 9th as Josh Rios (Cal State Fullerton) allowed those inherited runs to score, eventually recording the final two outs.
The Yakima Valley Pippins return home Monday night at 7:05 p.m. as they host the Cowlitz BlackBears for the final three home games of the regular season. Fans can listen to the action live on 1460 ESPN Yakima, the official home for Pippins Baseball.
