Sweets Sweep Behind Offensive Explosion
July 31, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Walla Walla, WASH- The Walla Walla Sweets (26-22) swept away the Cowlitz Black Bears (21-26) on Sunday with a 10-1 game three win. It was the third sweep for the Sweets this season.
Walla Walla scored in the first inning on an RBI double by Willie MacIver (Washington). He finished 3-4 on the day with three RBIs and a home run short of the cycle.
After Cowlitz answered to tie the game in the second, the Sweets put up four of their own in the bottom of the second. Ryan Johnston (UC Irvine) scored on a throwing error by Kevin Baker, the starter for the Black Bears, and Ben Baird (Washington) knocked in a run on a suicide squeeze. MacIver then launched a two-run triple to center field to make it 5-1 Sweets.
That score held until the sixth when Johnston scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1. Baird and Jarren Duran (Long Beach State) poked RBI singles to make it 8-1 Walla Walla.
In the seventh, Nick Nyquist slammed his fourth home run of the season. The two-run shot make it 10-1.
Nick Scheidler (UCLA) tossed five innings, only giving up one run, to pick up his first win on the season. The Sweets pitching staff only gave up one earned run the entire series to Cowlitz in the sweep.
After a day off, the Sweets will take on Wenatchee for three games. Bobby Ay (Cal Poly) will take the hill for game one. =
