Walks Doom the Coyotes

ALEXANDRIA, Louisiana- The Edinburg Coyotes (21-30) lost to the Alexandria Aces (31-22) 7-5 in a close ball game Monday night at Bringhurst Field.

Walks were the downfall of the Coyotes as they issued nine walks in the ball game. Five of which led to runs being scored. In the bottom of the first inning, the Aces got on the board first with just one hit. After two walks, Palmer Karr Jr. hit his 12th home run of the season over the left field wall to give the Aces a 3-0 lead.

But the offense kept the game close as the Coyotes answered in the top of the second inning off of Alexis Sosa. Amado German started the inning with a walk then he came around to score on an RBI triple by Logan Wood that made the score 3-1. Alex Entrekin then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Wood from third and cut the Aces' lead to one. The Coyotes added more runs in the top of the fourth inning. The inning started with three straight hits by Wood, Entrekin and Angelo Fermin. Fermin's single brought in Wood to tie the game at 3-3. With the bases loaded, Robert Matlock hit an RBI fielders choice to first to bring in Entrekin from third which made the score 4-3.

Walks continued to haunt Martinez in the bottom of the fifth inning. After two outs, Martinez walked the next two hitters to put runners at first and second. Jose Umbria then hit an RBI single to left field to tie the game at 4-4. In the top of the sixth inning, Robert Matlock took it upon himself to give the Coyotes the lead with his first home run of the season. Matlock hit a 2-2 pitch from Ronald Ramirez deep to right field to give the Coyotes a 5-4 lead.

But the Aces answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning with one run on three hits. Bryan Sabatella started the inning off with a single to center field. After Sabatella moved to second base on a ground out, Selwyn Langaigne hit an RBI single to left field that made the score 5-5.

The Aces got the go ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of reliever John Maschino (2-4). Maschino walked two hitters to put runners at first and second then a wild pitch moved the runners up an extra 90 feet. Umbria then hit a two run single to left field to give the Aces a 7-5 advantage. Wayne Hedden pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.

Logan Wood was three-for-four on the night with a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

The Coyotes and Aces will play the finale Tuesday night at Bringhurst Field with the first pitch scheduled at 7:05 p.m. Carlos Jan (1-1) will make his third start of the season as he will face former University of Texas Pan American alum Chad Linder (3-3).
