Walks Doom Diablos As Lemurs Take First Ever Meeting At Cohen Stadium

June 22, 2012 - American Association (AA)
El Paso Diablos News Release

EL PASO, TX- Diablos pitching surrendered eight walks that led to several Laredo Lemurs rallies, allowing the brand new franchise to win the two teams' first ever meeting at Cohen Stadium by a final of 13-8.

The biggest culprit was El Paso starter Juan Peralta (0-1), who had held the very same Lemurs to one run on four hits in seven innings just days before in Laredo. Peralta wasn't nearly as sharp in this game however, walking five (including three on four pitches) and lasted just three and a third innings before being lifted.

Each team struck for three runs in the first inning, with the Diablos fighting back to tie the game on an error and a two-run double by Brian Joynt, who knocked in three runs total in the contest. But two innings later, the Lemurs pounced on three free passes issued by Peralta and took a 9-3 lead after four innings, with the biggest hit coming from former Diablo Javier Brito. Brito's bases loaded, three-run double ended Peralta's night.

El Paso would collect 15 hits and post their highest run total since the team's last home game, but it wasn't enough as the Lemurs kept adding on to their own total each time it appeared the Diablos were preparing to rally. The home squad scored in four of the last five innings but were never able to produce the big inning and saw a ninth inning charge stunted after the first three men reached base.

Lemurs starter Matt Way (4-2), who had shut out the Diablos on one hit in his last start, didn't duplicate his dominating effort but pitched well enough to earn his fourth victory of 2012. Way went six innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs and, perhaps most importantly, did not issue a single walk.

Kyle Kreich was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing evening for the Diablos, allowing just one run in four innings of relief and inducing a double play ball in each of the four frames.

The Diablos will try and even the series on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. A starter has not yet been named for the game, which can be found on diablos.com under "Live Game Broadcasts".
