'Cats Score Nine in First to Take Series Opener

GARY, Ind. - The RailCats offense, held to seven total runs in their last four games, exploded for nine runs on seven hits in the first inning on their way to a 10-7 win over Lincoln on Friday night at U. S. Steel Yard. The win improved their record to 15-18 on the season in front of a crowd of 3,197 at U. S. Steel Yard.

Mike Coles and Mike Rohde hit back-to-back RBI singles for the first two runs in the first off of Saltdogs starter Justin Edwards. Coles scored on a throwing error by catcher Salomon Manriquez, then Rohde scored on a fielding error by third baseman Jimmy Rohan. David Cooper shot a two-run double to the gap in left and Mike Massaro tripled to center to bring home two more runs. Coles hit another run-scoring single to cap the scoring. The 'Cats sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning.

The Saltdogs rallied against RailCats starter Derek Drage in the third. Drage walked home a run, Stephen Holdren drove in a run with a single and Jimmy Rohan hit a sac fly. Tommy Collaro and Manriquez followed with back-to-back two-out RBI singles to cut the RailCats lead to 9-5.

Lincoln added two more runs in the fourth against reliever T.J. Wohlever, with a run scoring on a groundout by Holdren and a wild pitch to bring the Saltdogs to within 9-7.

Massaro drove in another run, his third of the game, with a single in the sixth to make it 10-7. Massaro leads the RailCats with eight games of three or more hits.

Coles extended his team season-high on-base streak to 18 games, and now has a team-high 14 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games. David Quinowski (1-0) got the win in relief. Starter Derek Drage left after 2.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

Stephen Hiscock (1-2) will take on Ryan Sheldon (3-2) in the middle game of the series on Saturday night at 6:10. The first 1,000 fans will receive a replica jersey giveaway.
