Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Atlantic City, NJ -- Josh Beauregard homered and Andrew Wishy knocked in four runs, but Mike Meagher was wild, walking seven in 4.1 innings, as the Atlantic City Surf edged the Worcester Tornadoes, 6-5, at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Wednesday night.

The night started off great for Worcester as Josh Beauregard stated the game by launching a Monte Mansfield (4-4) pitch over the rightfield wall to start the game. it was the third time in the last 11 games that Beauregard has started the Tornadoes half of the 1st inning with a home run. The Tornadoes added another run on a two-out RBI single for Andrew Wishy that plated Patrick Perry and Worcester led 2-0 after the top of the 1st.

However, Tornadoes starter Mike Meagher (3-4) got himself into trouble with his command. With one out in the 2nd inning, he walked Anthony Granato after getting ahead of him 1-2, then walked Rico Santana on four pitches. Joe Burke followed with a three-run home run to rightfield, his first of the season, putting the Surf on top, 3-2. Worcester tied it in the 3rd on an RBI groundout by Wishy, then took the lead in the 5th when a Wishy fielder's choice brought home Mike MacMillan to put the Tornadoes up 4-3.

But Atlantic City capitalized on Meagher's wildness again in the 5th. Back-to-back one-out walks to Lucas Taylor and David Keesee set the stage for Ed Montague, who brought both runners home with a double into the leftfield corner. Ryan Mitchell relieved Meagher and got Rob Fischer to line out to center, but Mark Burke singled home Montague to put the Surf up 6-4. Worcester would get within one on a two-out RBI single by Wishy (who drove in four of the five Worcester runs on the night, one in each of his four at-bats), but left the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the 8th and would get no closer.

Mansfield (4-4) picked up his second win in as many tries against Worcester and Meagher (3-4) took the loss. Matt Pike pitched a 1-2-3 9th for his league high-tying 13th save of the season. The seven walks issued by Meagher was a season-high by a Tornadoes pitcher. Worcester had the leadoff man on base in each of the first eight innings of the game, including a leadoff hit in each of the first seven innings. The Tornadoes are now 5-10 in one-run games on the season.

The Tornadoes will try to get back on track on Thursday night when they send righty Matt Weagle to the mound in Game Two of their four-game set with Atlantic City. The Surf will counter with lefty Brian Rodaway. First pitch is set for 7:05pm
