New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals, fresh off of clinching the first half championship and a spot in the 2007 Can-Am League playoffs, saw their sky high emotions and momentum come screeching to a halt on Wednesday against the Sussex Skyhawks.
On a hot and humid day, the Jackals offense was anemic when it mattered and the Jackal's pitching staff struggled to keep the team in the game.
Despite Sandy Madera's 11th home run of the season in the first inning, the Jackals surrendered the early 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to two bunt singles and an error. Right fielder Scott Grimes, catcher Matt Ceriani, and center fielder Ron Perodin would all come around to score in the half inning.
The game entered the sixth inning with Sussex ahead 4-3 when the Jackal bullpen imploded. Demetrius Banks entered the game in relief and proceeded to give up 7 runs on 8 hits in just 2/3 of an inning. The next pitcher, Tim Sabo, was not much better, giving up 4 runs in 1.1 innings of work.
During the sixth and seventh innings, a time span in which the Skyhawks scored 11 runs, second baseman Rob Gandolfo, first baseman Jabe Bergeron, and Perodin each scored twice. Despite all the runs scored, there were only two extra base hits, both of them doubles.
8 of the Skyhawks 9 starters drove in at least one run. Perodin, Bergeron, Ceriani, third baseman Brian Rios and designated hitter Larry Bethea all had multiple RBI. Bethea would blast a solo home run in the top of the ninth.
The Jackals would try and make it a contest, mounting several rallies late in the game. However, when it was all said and done Sussex, thanks to their season high 22 hits, took the game easily, 16-7.
The lone bright spot offensively for New Jersey was Sandy Madera, who went 3-5 with a home run and 5 RBI.
New Jersey starter Joel Bennett lost despite pitching well. He allowed three earned runs in five innings of work.
Vince Davis started the game for Sussex and allowed five earned runs in 5.2 innings, earning himself the victory.
