
Walks Cost Pheasants in Loss to Gary

GARY, Ind. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants outhit the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Friday night but were ultimately hurt by walks in a 5-4 loss at the U.S. Steel Yard.
Pete Gehle turned in a solid start for the Pheasants (37-47) but walked in the tying run in the fifth. In the seventh, Dan Cooper walked three men and gave up the go-ahead run on Brian Kolb's sacrifice fly.
The RailCats (42-43) took the opener of the three-game series.
Down 3-0 in the third, the Pheasants rallied with two outs and nobody on for four runs. Joe Anthonsen drew a walk, moved to third on Cory Morales' single and scored on a wild pitch. Four more hits followed, with RBIs for Reggie Abercrombie, Cesar Nicolas and Cristian Guerrero.
In the fifth, Gehle surrendered back-to-back singles and intentionally walked Ryan Babineau to load the bases before issuing a base on balls to Kolb. Kolb collected three RBI without a hit on two sacrifice flies and a walk.
Dan Cooper (1-6) suffered the loss, and Nolan Nicholson (4-3) earned the victory in relief.
Gehle tossed six innings, allowing four runs and six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Morales, Bolden and Nicolas each had a pair of hits for the Pheasants. Nicolas bolstered his team-best average to .353.
The middle game of the three-game series begins at 6:10 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
