Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Crawdads walkoff fever continued Monday night as they won on an extra innings walkoff single by Bubba Thompson to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds 2-1.
The win is the Crawdads' third walkoff in their last eight home games and fourth of the season.
Crawdads starter Tyler Phillips shut down the Shorebirds offense, throwing seven shutout innings. Phillips allowed five base hits, struck out seven and didn't issue a walk. He lowered his season ERA to 2.86.
'Dads left fielder Franklin Rollin led off the bottom of the eighth by with a bunt single that trickled down the left foul line. Franklin stole second and third base before being singled home by designated hitter Yohel Pozo to give the 'Dads a 1-0 lead.
Right hander Tyler Ferguson took over for Phillips and pitched a scoreless eighth but was removed after allowing a leadoff walk in the ninth. Lefty Sal Mendez entered the game and allowed the runner to score and tie the game at 1.
With the game tied after nine innings, the 'Dads went into extras for the first time this season at the Frans. Under new Minor League Baseball rules, teams begin extra innings with a runner on second base. Mendez held the Shorebirds scoreless in the top half of the inning to turn it over to the 'Dads offense.
Second baseman Kole Enright was the last out in the ninth for the Crawdads so he began the tenth as the runner on second. Shortstop Ryan Dorow sacrificed Enright to third on a bunt. Centerfielder Bubba Thompson drove in the winning run on a single to center.
The Crawdads homestand continues tomorrow evening as 'Dads righty Tyree Thompson (1-3, 5.64 ERA) takes on Shorebirds left hander DL Hall (0-1, 2.29 ERA) in a 6pm matchup.
