Vancouver Canadians News Release

EUGENE, OR - The first walk-off loss of the year for the Canadians came at the hands of the Eugene Emeralds [Giants] on Friday night at PK Park, a 2-1 defeat that started the second half and evened the six-game series at two games apiece.

Tied 1-1 after nine, the C's had runners at first and second with two outs in the tenth but failed to score. That set up a game-winning opportunity for Eugene, who bunted the placed runner to third to start their half of the inning. Up stepped Victor Bericoto, whose third hit of the game beat a drawn-in infield and put the Emeralds on top 2-1.

#8 Blue Jays prospect Cade Doughty provided the only run of the night for the Canadians when he broke a scoreless tie with his seventh homer of the year in the second inning.

It was a well-pitched game from both sides. Vancouver starter Rafael Sanchez went five strong frames and gave up his lone run in the bottom of the second after three consecutive batters reached with two outs to even the score at one. Abdiel Mendoza, Conor Larkin and Justin Kelly (L, 3-1) kept the Emeralds off the scoreboard from the sixth through the ninth before Eugene broke through for a game-winning unearned run in the tenth.

The C's managed only three hits, tied for their fewest in a game this year. Doughty, Gabby Martinez and Dasan Brown - three of Toronto's MLB.com Top 30 prospects - provided all the offense. Michael Turconi reached twice with two walks.

Game five of the series is set for Saturday night at 5:05 p.m. when #11 Blue Jays prospect Dahian Santos climbs the slope for the eleventh time. Coverage is available on CanadiansBaseball.com, the MiLB First Pitch app and the Sportsnet Radio Network.
