Modesto Nuts News Release
SAN JOSE, CA. - After another strong start, the Modesto Nuts' bullpen gave up a small lead in a 3-2 loss to the San Jose Giants on Sunday night at Excite Ballpark.
Sandro Fabian had tied the game for the Giants (38-49; 8-10) in the eighth inning with a two-out, two-strike, two-run single off J.T. Salter. In the ninth, Brandon Van Horn singled against Nuts (39-49; 9-9) reliever Reid Morgan (L, 0-1) to start the inning. On the play, it was bobbled in left allowing Van Horn to take second. Manuel Geraldo delivered the walk-off swing. With Van Horn at second, Geraldo hit a groundball near second. Johnny Adams, on a tough play, struggled to pick up the sharp grounder cleanly. As it kicked away from him, Geraldo was able to score from second to deliver a walk-off win for the Giants.
Ian McKinney shined in the start for the Nuts. The lefty worked six innings and did not allow a runner to reach second. He struck out the last four batters he faced and nine overall without walking a man.
Trenton Toplikar (W, 3-1) shined out of the Giants' bullpen. After allowing a leadoff single in the sixth, Toplikar retired 12 in a row to cool off the hot Nuts' offense.
The Nuts had opened their advantage in the fourth inning. Cal Raleigh doubled in the fourth before scoring on Jake Scheiner's RBI single. Joe Rizzo added a tally with a sac fly in the fifth.
The Nuts look to even up the three-game series in the middle affair on Monday night. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:50 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
