Midland, TX-After both offenses were held in check over the first seven innings, the RockHounds scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to win 7-1 Wednesday night at Citibank Ballpark. The inning saw 11 men come to bat, while the 'Hounds benefited from five walks and a pair of timely hits.
RockHounds starter Murphy Smith held the RoughRiders hitless until the top of the fourth, when Chris McGuiness drilled a base hit through the right side. Ryan Strausborger and Val Majewski also added singles, while Majewski's made it 1-0 Frisco.
Midland answered back in the home half of the inning. Josh Horton snapped Jake Brigham's streak of 10 straight retired with an opposite field double to left. A single and a walk loaded the bases, while Jeremy Barfield brought home Horton on a sacrifice fly.
With both starters working on cruise control, the 1-1 tie wouldn't be broken until the bottom of the eighth. On for his second inning of work, Fabio Castillo (1-1) allowed a single and a walk to begin the frame.
Steve Buechele went to the bullpen, calling on southpaw Corey Young with left-handed Shane Peterson coming up next in the order. However Paterson successfully executed a sacrifice bunt, to put both runners in scoring position.
After intentionally walking Jeremy Barfield, Anthony Aliotti gave the RockHounds the lead, driving home Josh Horton and Michael Choice. Later in the inning, Connor Crumbliss added a bases clearing triple, following walks to Ryan Ortiz and Dusty Coleman.
Frisco's Fabio Castillo picked up the loss, snapping a 16.1 scoreless innings streak. He allowed a pair of earned runs over one-plus frames. Midland's Trey Barnham (1-0) earned his first win, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. He struck out three.
Both starters delivered very strong outings. Jake Brigham earned a no-decision, but saw his earned run average drop from 3.02 to 2.84. He went six innings, allowing an earned run on six hits. Brigham also struck out eight in the game, the second highest total of the year for the right-hander.
Murphy Smith set new season highs for innings (7.1) and pitches thrown (108). He allowed a run on five hits and struck out three.
Frisco and Midland wrap-up their four game series Thursday night at Citibank Ballpark. Tim Murphy (1-3, 4.50) tosses for the 'Riders, he will be opposed by Hooks right-hander Gary Daley Jr. (4-2, 4.58).
