Springfield Cardinals News Release
Little Rock, AR - Winners of two straight against the Travelers, the Cardinals looked to make three in a row Wednesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Springfield sent newcomer Richard Castillo to the mound making his first Double-A start since April 26th of 2011. Arkansas countered with righty Ariel Pena who had lost four straight starts.
The Cardinals had a golden opportunity to jump out in front in the 2nd as Chris Swauger tripled and Jake Shaffer walked to start the innings. After two strikeouts and a walk loaded the bases, Kolten Wong grounded sharply to short to end the threat with nothing coming across.
Arkansas; however, would capitalize as Carlos Ramirez was hit by a pitch with one out and back to back two out singles brought him home to give the Travs a 1-0 lead.
In the 4th with two outs, Xavier Scruggs connected for his 5th home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, to tie the game 1-1.
Richard Castillo retired eight straight heading into the 5th, but allowed a one out triple to Angel Castillo, his second hit and first mutli-hit game of the season, and a double to Renny Osuna to give Arkansas the lead again, 2-1.
Castillo would go seven strong innings allowing just the two runs on the six hits while striking out six.
The Cardinals had left eight men on base and did not collect a hit with runners in scoring position, but in the 9th with one out Audry Perez singled and Greg Garcia doubled before Kolten Wong singled to left to tie the game 2-2. Springfield would load the bases after an intentional walk to Oscar Taveras, but Kyle Conley flied to left to end the inning.
