Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - John Waldron missed 11 January and February games due to injury; his rousing return to the Waterloo Black Hawks lineup led the United States Hockey League to name him Forward of the Week on Tuesday.
The third-year forward's first game action since January 14th came on Friday night versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Midway through the opening period, Waldron scored on a partial breakaway. Then at the same end of the rink 20 seconds into the third, the Batavia, Illinois, native scored for a second time, planting what would ultimately be the winning goal in a 5-3 Hawks victory.
The next night against Des Moines, Waldron matched his goal total while also adding a pair of assists. The Hawks blitzed the Buccaneers for a 9-2 win. For the weekend, Waldron had four goals, two assists, and a +3 plus/minus differential. He was involved in two of Waterloo's three power play goals and credited with a team-high eight shots on goal.
Waldron was already enjoying a breakout year with the Black Hawks. Prior to being injured, he had eight goals and 13 assists in 2021/22. That included a four-game goal streak from November 20th to 27th. From November 20th through the USHL's Christmas break, the Miami University recruit had tabulated six goals and six assists in nine games.
Now with 91 career USHL appearances to his credit, Waldron has 14 goals and 28 assists. That includes three career game-winning goals.
Waldron is the first Black Hawk to win a USHL weekly award since Cooper Wylie was named the league' Defenseman of the Week on October 19th. Adding two Goalie of the Week titles for Jack Williams (September 29th and October 5th), Waterloo players have been recognized four times this season.
The Hawks next game is tonight on the road against the Omaha Lancers at 7:05 p.m.
