Wahl Scores Twice, Red Beats White

August 30, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

Mitch Wahl had two goals and an assist and Levko Koper had a goal and a pair of helpers as Team Red defeated Team White in the Spokane Chiefs Annual Red-White Scrimmage. A crowd of 2,113 fans attended the free scrimmage that signified the end of the Chiefs pre-season camp.

"It was outstanding," Chiefs Head Coach Hardy Sauter about the four day evaluation period.

The Chiefs will take the day off the ice on Monday before three days of practice at Eagles Ice-A-Rena preparing for their first pre-season game of the year in Everett on Friday.

"We're going to hit the ground running this week and implement some simple systems and prepare for the Everett tournament," Sauter said.

As much as the Red-White scrimmage is a chance for fans to see the veterans return after a summer off, it is also the first opportunity to watch prospects the team has acquired through the draft or list process. Fourteen of the 43 players participating in the scrimmage were from the 2008 and 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, including their last two first round picks Mitch Holmberg, 21st overall in 2008, and Reid Gow, 16th overall this spring. Connor Chartier, Spokane's second round pick in 2009, scored two of White's goals, one on a penalty shot, in the second period.

Dominik Uher, Spokane's only selection in the 2009 CHL Import Draft from the Czech Republic, opened the scoring at 12:38 of the first period on assists from Anthony Bardaro and Jesse Collins, a Nine Mile Falls product. Koper made it 2-0 in the first on a backdoor feed from Wahl with just six-seconds remaining in the period.

After Chartier pulled White within one 9:00 into the second, Wahl scored his first of two at 10:56 for Red. Brenden Kichton, a second year defenseman, broke out Koper who centered it to the 19-year-old Wahl for the goal. Chartier scored on a penalty shot for White at the end of the period to make it 3-2, Red, after two.

Holmberg scored at 3:19 of the third and Wahl put the final tally on the board for Red at 5:39 from Koper and Matt Marantz.

Mike Betz, a 17-year-old forward, scored on a Kenton Miller assist at 8:46 for the game's last goal.

On Friday, Spokane will travel to take on the Portland Winterhawks in the Everett Silvertips Annual Pre-Season Tournament. The Chiefs will play three games in three nights with a game versus Tri-City on Saturday and the host Silvertips on Sunday. All three games will begin at 3:00.
