Wade Moore's 2-run homer caps 6-run 3rd inning for Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Lake Monsters scored six times in the bottom of the third inning and went on to defeat the Lowell Spinners 9-4 in the 2010 New York-Penn League opener for both teams at historic Centennial Field on Friday night.

Chad Mozingo plated the first two runs of the season for the Lake Monsters with a two-run double scoring Jack Walker and Wilfri Pena for a 2-0 lead. Hendry Jimenez followed with an RBI double to center and then scored two batters later on a throwing error for a 4-0 advantage. Wade Moore capped off the six-run inning with a two-run homer to rightfield.

Vermont starter Taylor Jordan held the Spinners scoreless over the first four innings, but Lowell touched him for four runs in the fifth inning. Joantoni Garcia had an RBI single and then the Spinners scored three unearned runs to cut the Lake Monster lead to 6-4. The second run scored on a Jimenez fielding error followed by RBI singles from Bryce Brentz and Brandon Jacobs.

The Lake Monsters got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a Pena two-run single and then added another run in the eighth on a Jimenez RBI single for a 9-4 lead. Moore and Jimenez both had two hits on the night for Vermont, while four Lake Monsters had two RBI.

Reliever Bobby Hansen (1-0) record the final out of the fifth inning and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings for the win. Glenn Gibson had three strikeouts in two perfect innings of relief to wrap up the victory.

Lowell starter Roman Mendez (0-1) allowed six runs (three earned) on three hits over three innings for the loss. Jose Garcia and Jacobs both had two hits for the Spinners.

Vermont is now 6-11 all-time in season openers and have won each of their last four home openers. It was also the fifth time that the Lake Monsters have faced Lowell in a season opener and the first win for Vermont after losing to the Spinners in 1997, 2005, 2006 and 2009.

The teams meet again on Saturday starting at 6:05 pm at historic Centennial Field. Clyde Jenkins is scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters and the first 1,000 fans in attenandance will receive a Lake Monsters autograph book when the gates open at 5:00 pm.
