TROY, NY-SS Oscar Figueroa (2-5) hit an RBI double to score Ben Orloff (0-0) from second base to give the Tri-City ValleyCats (1-0) a 4-3 "walk-off" win over the Connecticut Tigers (0-1) before 5,370 fans at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in the 2010 season opener for both teams and the inaugural game in Connecticut Tigers history.
The ValleyCats opened the scoring in the first inning on a solo home run by RF Michael Kvasnicka (2-4). He hit the first pitch from Connecticut starter RHP Clemente Mendoza over the left field wall to give Tri-City a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers scored two runs in the 2nd inning thanks to a two-run double by DH Ryan Enos (2-4). 1B James Robbins (1-4) led off the inning with a single and 3B Josh Ashenbrenner (0-4) popped out. Robbins moved to second base on a single by SS Brett Anderson (1-4). Both runners advanced one base when Tri-City RF Michael Kvasnicki accidentally misplayed the baseball and was charged with an error. Both runners were in scoring position for Enos, who smacked a pitch into the left field corner for a two-run double and a 2-1 Tigers lead.
Tri-City added a run in the 4th inning. Kvasnicka led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a groundout by 3B Tyler Burnett (1-4). C Ben Heath (1-4) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Kvasnicka and tie the game at 2-2.
Connecticut took a 3-2 lead in the 5th inning on back-to-back doubles by Enos and C Eric Roof (1-3). Roof's two-bagger plated Enos to once again give the Tigers a one-run lead.
The ValleyCats scored a single run in the 5th inning to tie the game at 3-3. CF Wilton Infante (1-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a single by Figueroa. With Kvasnicka at-bat, Mendoza was called for a balk. Infante scored from third base for a 3-3 tied score.
Mendoza pitched six innings and allowed three runs on nine hits to get the no-decision.
