
Voyagers Pitching Controls Second-Half Opener

Great Falls, MT - The Voyagers strung together some timely hits in the middle frames and used solid pitching in a 6-1 victory over Idaho Falls Friday night at Centene Stadium. Great Falls (1-0, 16-22) has won two in a row and improved to 5-5 against Idaho Falls in the season series. The Voyagers are 8-8 at home. The Chukars (0-1, 21-17) dropped their second straight and sit at 10-9 on the road this season.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings until Great Falls sent eight men to the plate in a two-run fourth. Sam Abbott started the inning with a double to left-center that rolled to the wall. Lency Delgado reached base with a bunt single up the first-base line. Tyrus Greene drove Abbott in from third with a base-hit grounded into right. The second run scored Delgado from third on a wild pitch.
The Voyagers plated two in the fifth for a 4-0 cushion. Sam Abbott reached base with a one-out walk. Lency Delgado doubled on a line drive to left that put runners at second and third. With two outs, Anderson Comas smacked a line drive triple into the right field corner that scored both runners easily.
Great Falls put the game out of reach with another two-spot in the sixth. Kelvin Maldonado led off the inning with an infield single to third. After a fly out, Luis Curbelo singled on line-drive to center. Luis Mieses topped it off with a two-run double to the wall in left-center for a 6-0 advantage. The only Chukars run of the night came across in the seventh on an RBI single by Ismaldo Rodriguez. It scored Michael Emodi from third after he had tripled.
Avery Weems posted his first home win on the mound. Weems (2-1) pitched five scoreless and gave up just two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. In his four starts for Great Falls since being promoted from the AZL White Sox, Weems has struck out 32 and walked just four in 21-and-a-third innings pitched. Bryar Johnson took the loss for Idaho Falls. Johnson (1-2) lasted four-and-a-third and allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
The Voyagers outhit the Chukars 14-to-7. Luis Curbelo led the attached with three singles. Luis Mieses collected two hits and two RBIs. Sam Abbott and Lency Delgado also had two hits apiece with two runs. Kelvin Maldonado went 2-for-4. Clay Dungan, Michael Emodi, and Ismaldo Rodriguez all had two hits in defeat for Idaho Falls. Great Falls was 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position, while the Chukars were just 1-for-7. Great Falls continues its seven-day home stand with game four of five against Idaho Falls Saturday night.
