Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (August 12, 2015)Â - The Great Falls Voyagers held a late lead, but saw the Grand Junction Rockies score three runs in the last two innings to end their nine-game losing streak with a 3-1 win Wednesday night at Suplizio Field.
With Great Falls (8-5, 25-24) leading 1-0, the Rockies (3-10, 23-28) erased the deficit in the seventh. With one out, Tyler Nevin homered off Voyager righty Brannon Easterling (4-2), tying the score at one apiece. Jonathan Piron followed with a single for Grand Junction, and with two down, he came in to score the go-ahead run on a Chris Rabago double.
The Rockies added an insurance tally in the eighth. With two down, Grand Junction put together back-to-back singles, then scored their third run of the night on a passed ball.
The three runs were enough for the relief duo of Chad Zurat (3-3) and Hunter Brothers who closed things out for Grand Junction. Zurat kept the Voyagers off the board with scoreless seventh and eighth frames, while Brothers retired the side in order in the ninth for his third save.
Although he took the loss, Easterling pitched well, working into the seventh inning for the second consecutive start. The righty gave up two earned runs in his six and two-thirds frames of work to collect his team-leading sixth quality start.
For the third straight time in the series Great Falls scored first, plating the contest's first run in the opening inning. Landon Lassiter started the game with a single and stole second before eventually scoring on a ground out by Antonio Rodriguez. The RBI was Rodriguez's 32nd of the year, tying him with Zach Fish for the team lead.
The first inning marker was the lone tally of the night for Great Falls, who could not muster much against Rockies starter Gavin Glanz, who scattered four hits in six frames, also earning a quality start for his efforts.
After an off day on Thursday, the Voyagers will return home to Centene Stadium Friday night to begin a seven-game homestand, starting with a three-game set against the Orem Owlz. In Friday's series opener, Great Falls will send right-hander Brandon Magallones (3-2, 4.35) to the hill, while Orem will counter with fellow righty Jared Ruxer (0-2, 7.31). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and coverage will begin at 6:45 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
