Great Falls Voyagers News Release
HELENA, Mont. (August 30, 2014) - Great Falls and Helena split a doubleheader Saturday at Kindrick Field with the Voyagers taking the opener 5-2, and the Brewers taking the second game 7-5.
With game one tied at one in the fifth, the Voyagers (14-18, 37-33) regained the lead against Brewer starter Jorge Ortega (3-5). With two outs and the bases loaded, Patrick Palmeiro came up with a two-out single to give the visitors the lead back. Louie Lechich then followed with a single of his own to bring the advantage to three.
The three-run lead was enough for Dane Stone (6-2) who gave up a run in the first to the Brewers (11-22, 24-47), but did not allow another after that. The righty gave up five hits in his five innings while striking out a pair to earn his team-leading sixth win.
Great Falls added an insurance run in the seventh. Again it was Palmeiro delivering with two outs, singling to push the lead to four, at 5-1.
In the home half of the seventh, Helena scored one as Brandon Diaz drove in his second run of the game, but Devon Davis closed it out from there to earn his second save.
In game two, the Brewers (12-23, 25-47) struck first, scoring three in the second against Voyager starter Anthony Santiago (2-3). Alan Sharkey got things rolling for the home team, starting the frame with a solo homer. Gregory Munoz and Diaz each added an RBI later in the inning to make it 3-0.
Great Falls (14-19, 37-34) picked up their first run of game two in the third. After John Ziznewski walked, Hunter Jones doubled for the Voyagers first hit of the second game to bring Ziznewski home.
Helena answered in the bottom half of the frame. Luis Aviles drove in a run with a triple, then Dionis Hinojosa followed later on with a run-producing double.
Over the next few innings the Voyagers closed the gap. Lechich hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to bring in a run, then Jones and Ethan Gross collected RBIs in the fifth to close the Brewers lead to one.
The Brewers added two insurance markers in the sixth. Diaz continued his big day, tripling in a pair to give Helena a three-run advantage, giving him five runs batted in the doubleheader.
Great Falls pulled one back in the seventh on an RBI single from Zach Fish, but Kaleb Earls (1-0) shut the Voyagers down after that to collect his first professional win.
The Voyagers and Brewers wrap-up their season series Sunday afternoon at Kindrick Field. Great Falls will send lefty Brian Clark (2-4, 3.32) to the hill, while Helena will counter with fellow southpaw Luis Ortega (3-8, 9.47). First pitch is set for 1:05 and coverage will begin at 12:50 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
