Great Falls Voyagers News Release

HELENA, Mont. (August 31, 2014) - Pitching was the story for Great Falls Sunday as the Voyagers took their final regular season matchup with the Helena Brewers 6-2 at Kindrick Field.

Brian Clark (3-4) got things started for Great Falls (15-19, 38-34), although he got off to a shaky start. After the Voyagers had taken a 3-0 lead on RBIs from Mason Robbins and Zach Fish, the lefty surrendered two runs in the home half of the first.

After the first, Clark settled in. Over his final four innings of work, the southpaw allowed three base runners, one of which was erased on a double play. Clark struck out four in his five frames, and retired the last eight he faced.

In the sixth, Clark was replaced by Charlie Sharrer, who picked up right where the Voyagers starter left off. In two innings of relief, Sharrer retired all six Brewers (12-22, 25-47) he faced.

David Trexler then came on for the final two frames, retiring the first five he saw, before giving up a two-out single in the ninth to Alan Sharkey. In all, the trio of Clark, Sharrer, and Trexler combined to retire 19 Helena batters in a row.

There was not much offense to be had for Great Falls either after their three-run first, but they did add some insurance to their lead in the third. With two on and two out, Fish hit a ground ball to second that was bobbled by Helena second baseman Francisco Castillo.

The error opened the door for the Voyagers to tack on three unearned insurance runs against Brewer starter Luis Ortega (3-9). Dillon Haupt scored on the error, Louie Lechich drove in a run for the fourth game running with a single, and a third tally came in on an Ortega wild pitch.

With the win, Great Falls ends their 2014 season series with an 11-5 record against the Brewers, including a 6-2 mark at Kindrick Field.

The Voyagers continue their road trip Monday as they begin a two-game set with the Billings Mustangs at Dehler Park. Great Falls will send righty Kelvis Valerio (0-1, 3.60) to the mound, while Billings will counter with fellow right-hander Tyler Mahle (5-4, 4.02). First pitch is set for 4:05 and coverage will begin at 3:50 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
