Great Falls Voyagers News Release

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (September 4, 2014) - The Great Falls Voyagers were shutout for the fourth time this season Thursday night, wrapping up the 2014 regular season with a 4-0 loss to the Missoula Osprey at Centene Stadium.

After the first two Osprey (19-19, 36-40) were retired in the first, the next five reached against Great Falls starter Dane Stone (6-3). The rally started with a single from Gerard Hernandez who then scored on a line drive two-run homer from Taylor Ard.

Following the Ard home run, Great Falls (16-22, 39-37) made a couple of errors to allow a third Missoula run to come in to score, and Bennie Robinson capped the inning with a run-producing single.

The four-run cushion was more than enough for Missoula starter Dallas Newton (4-5). The righty retired the first eight he faced, not allowing a base runner until he walked Zach Stoner with two outs in the third.

Newton served up five hitless innings, before John Ziznewski broke up the no-hit bid with an infield single to lead off the sixth. The Ziznewski single was the only Voyager knock of the night, setting a new season-low for the Great Falls offense.

In back of Newton, the Osprey bullpen kept things rolling as the trio of Will Landsheft, Jency Solis, and Cody Clark each served up a scoreless frame, combining to allow just one more Voyager to reach.

For Great Falls, Stone recovered to throw four scoreless frames after the four-run first, and then saw Matt Cooper and Charlie Sharrer keep the home team in it as they each delivered a pair of scoreless innings.

With the 2014 regular season now in the books, the Voyagers turn their attention to the playoffs, where they will meet the Billings Mustangs in the North Division Championship Series. Game one is set for Friday night at Dehler Park in Billings, while games two and three (if necessary) will be at Centene Stadium. In game one, Great Falls will send righty Luis Martinez (2-1, 1.42) to the hill, while Billings will counter with fellow right-hander Wyatt Strahan (0-3, 2.76). First pitch is set for 7:05 and coverage will begin at 6:50 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
