Voting Set For Player Of The Year

Brandon, Manitoba - Shoppers Drug Mart is pleased to announce plans to give western Manitoba hockey fans the opportunity to choose the Brandon Wheat Kings' Player of the Year for the 2007-2008 Western Hockey League season.

Beginning today - Thursday, January 17th - fan Balloting will be available at both Shoppers Drug Mart locations as well as online at www.wheatkings.com Fans can also vote by visiting Fan Services during all Wheat King home games at Westman Communications Group Place.

To help officially kick off this year's Fan voting, three members of the Wheat Kings - Matt Lowry, Tyler Dittmer and captain Daryl Boyle - were available at the Victoria Avenue East location Thursday afternoon, signing autographs, distributing complimentary copies of the hockey club's official 2007-08 media guide as well as casting the first votes.

"Shoppers Drug Mart in Brandon are happy to sponsor the Brandon Wheat Kings MVP of the year," says Glenda Marsh, Pharmacist, Owner of Shoppers Drug Mart Brandon. "This years Wheat Kings are an exciting team to watch and we wish them good luck the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs."

The deadline to enter is Monday, March 10th at 12 Midnight, with the winner to be announced by Richard and Glenda Marsh of Shoppers Drug Mart on Wednesday, March 12th when the Wheat Kings play host to the visiting Prince Albert Raiders during Brandon's second to last regular season home game at Westman Place.

Recent winners of the hockey club's Player of the Year Fan Voting have included left-winger Mark Derlago (2007), center Codey Burki (2006) and right-winger Eric Fehr (2005), who later became only the fifth Wheat King to be chosen the WHL Player of the Year, joining the likes of Marty Murray (1995), Ray Ferraro (1984) and Wheat Kings' all time goal scoring leader Ron Chipperfield (1974). A native of Minnedosa, Chipperfield scored 261 goals during his Wheat King playing days, while Ferraro still has the distinction of scoring the most goals in a single season (108).

This marks the first season that Shoppers Drug Mart has served as the Title Sponsor for the Wheat Kings' Player of the Year Award.

On the ice, the Wheat Kings practiced at the Canada Games Sportsplex again Thursday in preparation for Friday's game against the visiting Saskatoon Blades. Brandon will be hoping to snap a 2-game losing streak while cutting into Regina's lead atop the WHL's Eastern Division.
