Volcanoes Outlast Indians in Wild One
June 30, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Volcanoes won a wild game Monday night, defeating Spokane 7-5 at Volcanoes Stadium. A night after being shutout, Salem-Keizer pounded out 10 hits and scored in four separate innings to bring home the victory.
The seven-run outburst was the second highest total for Salem-Keizer this season, the first also coming against Spokane on June 27.
Things didn't start particularly well though, as the Indians took an early lead in the first courtesy of some aggressive base running. LeDarious Clark led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Leon Byrd then drew a one-out walk, placing men at the corners for Jamie Potts. Volcanoes' starter Logan Webb (1-0, 6.43 ERA) struck out Potts with a ball in the dirt, but as catcher Brad Moss threw down to first to complete the out, Clark broke for home. First baseman Chris Shaw rushed a throw back to the plate but it soared over Moss' head, allowing Clark to score and put Spokane out in front, 1-0.
The lead was only temporary, however, as the Volcanoes answered right back in the bottom of the first. Indians' starter Peter Fairbanks (0-1, 4.66 ERA) hit leadoff man Ronnie Jebavy, who then stole second before advancing to third on a single by Chase Compton. That set the stage for Steven Duggar - the newest 2015 draftee to join Salem-Keizer. Duggar stuck out in his first Volcanoes at bat, but not before Fairbanks threw a wild pitch past his catcher that allowed Jebavy to score and tie the game.
Julio Pena put Salem-Keizer out in front with two outs in the fourth, blasting his second home run of the year over the left field fence. The homer was the Volcanoes' Northwest League-leading 8th of the season. The Volcanoes weren't done, either, as Richard Rodriguez and Jebavy both reached and later scored when Compton punched a single into right, pushing the Salem-Keizer lead to 4-1.
The Volcanoes strung together some more two-out magic in the fifth. C.J. Hinojosa and Jose Vizcaino Jr. both reached with two outs before Moss stroked a single into center, scoring Hinojosa and extending the Volcanoes' lead.
The Indians inched closer in the fifth and sixth innings, hitting solo home runs in both frames, but never retook the lead.
Duggar picked up the first hit of his professional career to leadoff the seventh and, following a single by Shaw, scored his first run. Hinojosa ripped a double down the left field line that scored both runners and put the Volcanoes up 7-3.
Spokane threatened in the bottom of the eighth, pulling within a pair of runs, but the Volcanoes bullpen held on to secure the victory. Caleb Smith tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save.
Webb was solid in his third professional start, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five in his five innings of work.
Player of the Game: Compton had the best night of his Volcanoes career, going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. He's the first Volcanoes' hitter to have a four-hit game this season.
Up Next: The Volcanoes wrap up their series with Spokane tomorrow night. Nate Santiago (0-1, 5.40 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. Volcanoes Stadium will also finish up its Agriculture Week by honoring the Oregon cattle industry. First pitch is set for 6:35.
