Volcanoes Can't Find Offense in Loss
June 30, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Indians roughed up Volcanoes starter Nick Gonzalez early on and Salem-Keizer couldn't recover, falling to Spokane 8-0 at Volcanoes Stadium.
Gonzalez (0-2, 7.36 ERA) breezed through the game's first inning but looked like a different pitcher in the second. Six of the first seven batters that Gonzalez faced reached, tagging the left-hander for four runs and chasing him from the game. Reliever Rayan Hernandez worked his way out of the jam, retiring the two men he faced to end the frame and limit the Indians to a 4-0 lead.

Hernandez ran into a mess of his own in the fourth, however, loading the bases without recording an out. He walked in two runs before being pulled in favor of reliever Jarret Leveret, who escaped the inning without allowing another run. The damage was done though as Spokane took a 6-0 lead.
The Volcanoes, meanwhile, couldn't solve Spokane starter Cody Palmquist (1-0, 1.93 ERA). The right-hander fired five shutout innings, allowing only four hits while striking out five.
The Spokane bullpen was effective as well, retiring the first 11 batters it faced in order until Miguel Gomez singled with two outs in the ninth.
The Indians tacked on two more runs in the eighth, firmly putting the game out of reach.
The loss marked the first time Salem-Keizer was shutout this season. Remarkably, the 2014 Volcanoes weren't shutout until the 59th game of the season.
Player of the Game: Volcanoes first baseman Chris Shaw, the 31st overall selection in the 2015 Draft, went 1-for-4 with a walk.
Up Next: The Volcanoes continue their series with the Spokane Indians tomorrow night. Logan Webb (0-1, 8.00 ERA) will start for Salem-Keizer. Volcanoes Stadium will also continue its Agriculture Week by honoring the Oregon grass seed industry. First pitch is set for 6:35.
