Volcanoes Lose Rubber Match Against Spokane

KEIZER, Oregon - Game five between the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and the Spokane Indians went to extra innings with the Indians winning the game 5-4 and the series.

The Volcanoes got things started in the first inning when left fielder Gio Brusa hit his fifth home run of the season on an opposite field line drive to left. Brusa now leads the team in home runs with five.

But the Indians countered in the top of the second as center fielder Darius Day hit an RBI single to right field to bring in first baseman Todd McDonald.

The Indians scored another run in the third as left fielder Preston Scott doubled down the felt field line to bring in shortstop Charles LeBlanc.

The Volcanoes tied the game in the bottom of the fifth at two apiece as third baseman Manuel Geraldo singled to right field to knock in second baseman Kevin Rivera.

The Indians took back the lead in the top of the sixth when McDonald had a line drive RBI double to centerfield to score left fielder Preston Scott. McDonald would later score on a pass ball in the inning, bringing the score to 4-2.

The Volcanoes would not go quietly though, as they tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. First baseman Ryan Kirby had an RBI double to left field as right fielder Heath Quinn scored on the play. Designated hitter Leo Rojas then singled to right field to bring in Kirby and tie the game.

At the end of the ninth inning, this game was tied at 4-4, forcing extra innings.

Second baseman Brallan Perez broke the tie in the top of the eleventh as he hit his second home run of the season, and series, giving the Indians the lead.

The Volcanoes would not score in the bottom of the eleventh, keeping the score at 5-4.

Right-hander Raffi Vizcaino started the game for the Volcanoes, going up against Indians righty Kyle Cody.

Vizcaino had a solid outing as he pitched six innings, giving up four runs (three earned), six hits, striking out six and walking one.

Nolan Riggs, CJ Gettman and Rayan Hernandez came in for relief for the Volcanoes. Hernandez picked up the loss as he pitched one inning, allowed one run, one hit, along with one strikeout and no walks.

Cody pitched five innings for the Indians, giving up two runs (one earned), five hits, had four strikeouts and two walks. Steven Bruce picked up the win for the Indians as he pitched three innings, allowed no runs, one hit, along with three strikeouts and no walks.

The Volcanoes will face off against the Eugene Emeralds in their next game. Game one of the three game series will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, August 9, at 6:35 p.m. Righty Victor Concepcion will pitch for the Volcanoes, facing off against Erling Moreno at Volcanoes stadium.
