NWL1 Hillsboro Hops

Hops Fall In Series Finale

August 9, 2016 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Hillsboro Hops News Release

The Hops have been digging the longball lately, but the short game worked out just fine for the Everett AquaSox on Monday night.

The Frogs (7-4 2nd half, 25-24) salvaged the final game of their five-game home series against Hillsboro (7-4, 26-23) with a 7-3 win at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Hops won the series 3-2 and took the season series 6-4 from the North Division-leading AquaSox. The Hops still lead the South Division by one game over the Eugene Emeralds and two games over Salem-Keizer and Boise. Everett maintained its one-game lead over Spokane in the North.

Everett stole four bases in four attempts and succesfully used sacrifice bunts to set up run-scoring opportunities. Johmbekyer Morales went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and Dimas Ojeda hit his fourth home run of the season for the Frogs. Ojeda replaced Kyle Lewis in the Everett lineup on July 21 after the Mariners' top draft pick was lost for the season with a knee injury. His second-inning homer to right center gave Everett a 1-0 lead. Jason Morozowski threw out Johmbeyer Morales at the plate trying to score on Yojhan Quevedo's single to left to keep the score in place.

When Morozowki came to the plate in the third, the Hops had two runners on base after Jose Queliz reached on a slow chopper to short and Ben DeLuzio's sacrifice bunt turned into an error when Morales throw pulled Kristian Brito's glove into the runner as the ball bounced to the ground. Morozowski followed with a home run that just cleared the right field wall to the left of the hand-operated scoreboard putting the Hops in front 3-1.

Austin Grebeck tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning after Morales singled with one out and Joe Venturino reached on an error.

Tyler Mark (4-3) suffered the loss, going 4+ innings with seven hits, four runs, two earned, three strikeouts and three walks. The walks tied a season-high for the NWL All-Star pitcher. After back-to-back walks to open the fifth, Colin Poche replaced Mark on the hill. Ojeda bunted the runners to second and third and Morales drove in Eric Filia with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Frogs a 4-3 lead.

Jeffeson Medina (1-0) pitched three innings of scoreless relief after Robert Dugger went the first four innings. Dugger was making his first professional start after two relief appearances at AAA Tacoma and four in the Arizona League. With the Everett lead still 4-3 and the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Medina struck out Josh Anderson to quell the threat. Anderson hit a game-tying home run off Medina three nights earlier in the seventh inning when the Hops overcame a 5-0 deficit and beat Everett 7-5.

Morozowski went 2-for-2 for the Hops, reaching base four times. Jose Queliz also had two hits. Filia reached base four times for Everett, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two walks. The former UCLA Bruin had a hit in all ten games against the Hops this year, reaching base 27 times (13-for-31, 13 walks, 1 hit-by-pitch).

The Hops return to action at Boise Tuesday night. Time of the game is 6:15 p.m. PST with pregame airtime at 5:45 p.m. on Rip City Radio 620 AM.
