Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Oregon - Not much went right for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Tuesday night as they fell 11-5 against the first-half champions, the Eugene Emeralds. The Volcanoes only managed a single hit through the first five innings of the first game of a three-game series.
Volcanoes starter Victor Concepcion struggled early on, giving up two runs in the second and third innings, as well as five of Eugene's six runs in the fourth inning. The Emeralds' bats would stay hot against Volcanoes reliever John Timmins, who gave up two more runs during his two innings on the mound.
Eugene starter Erling Moreno held the Volcanoes in check over his five innings. He allowed a first inning walk to center fielder Bryan Reynolds and a single from third baseman Manuel Geraldo, which were the only two blemishes on his night.
Moreno would give way to reliever Alex Santana, who the Volcanoes had a little more success against. He would allow four runs - three of them earned - on four hits. The highlight of the four-run inning was a two RBI single from first baseman Ryan Kirby, which scored both Geraldo and Reynolds.
Geraldo along with shortstop Ryan Howard led the offense for Salem-Keizer, each going 2-for-4. Volcano relievers Matt Pope and Hengerber Medina each threw two scoreless innings to finish the game.
Eugene third baseman Wladmir Galindo led all hitters, going 4-for-6 on the night, falling just a triple short of the cycle. He had three RBI and scored three runs for the Emeralds.
Salem-Keizer would also make five errors in the field in a night to forget for Volcano fans.
Concepcion was saddled with the loss for the Volcanoes; he is now 3-5. Moreno improves to 1-0 for the Emeralds.
Looking ahead, game two of the three game set with the Emeralds is set for tomorrow night, August 10. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
