KEIZER, Ore. - Chuckie Jones infield grounder in the bottom of the 12th inning was bobbled by shortstop Marco Hernandez, allowing Sam Eberle to score the winning run, lifting the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes to a 3-2 victory over the Boise Hawks in the 2012 Northwest League opener for both teams at Volcanoes Stadium.

Eberle led off the 12th with a base hit, moving to second on an infield single from Kentrell Hill. After the runners were moved up on a sacrifice bunt, Jones slapped a one-hopper to Hernandez, but couldn't handle the short hop, ending the game.

Boise took an early 1-0 lead in the fifth, as Dong-Yub Kim plated a run with an RBI ground out, but S-K rallied against reliever Matt Spencer in the sixth - taking advantage of a dropped third strike and an error. Jones tied the game with a bases loaded walk, with a Stephen Yarrow sacrifice fly giving the Volcanoes a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks would tie the game in the ninth, as Gioskar Amaya reached second on a throwing error, with Hernandez following with a base hit to center that was bobbled by Jones, allowing Amaya to score. Boise had runners at first and second in the 12th, but Kim grounded into a double play.

Xavier Batista and Hernandez each had two hits for the Hawks. Starter Jose Arias was solid, going five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out two. Rafael Diplan and Bryce Shafer combined for five-plus innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits, striking out five.

Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night, with James Pugliese getting the call for the Hawks opposite Joan Gregorio at 8:05 p.m. (MT). The game will be carried on 1350 KTIK-AM.
