Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
After a 13-hit night to open the series in Boise, the Volcanoes tacked on eight more hits in a 4-2 loss to the Boise Hawks. There were only six runs scored by both teams in the second game of the three-game series between the Hawks and the Volcanoes.
Salem-Keizer entered the game having scored the most runs through four games in franchise history, with 37 runs, and added two more in Tuesday's game. The Volcanoes scored 34 runs through four games back in 2001.
Volcanoes' starter Mac Marshall tossed 5.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, with four strikeouts in his first appearance for Salem-Keizer. Cesar Yanez came out to start the sixth inning in relief for Marshall and struck out a batter and allowed a hit in his first inning. He lasted a third of an inning before turning to the newest Volcano, Carlos Diaz, who faced one batter, before Nolan Riggs finished the seventh inning getting two ground outs to end the frame.
Boise struck first by scoring two runs in the third inning. Catcher Will Haynie, a late addition to the lineup, led off the inning with a single. The Hawks got singles from center fielder Eric Toole and shortstop Garrett Hampson to load the bases. Left fielder Steven Linkous sacrifice flied out to center field, scoring Haynie, and designated hitter Bobby Stahel grounded out to second base, which scored Toole.
Salem-Keizer scored one run each in the top of the fourth and fifth from center fielder Juan Rodriguez and right fielder Ashford Fulmer. Rodriguez reached in the fourth on a one-out single, catcher Zack Bowers walked two batters later, and third baseman Chase Compton singled, scoring Rodriguez.
Fulmer came around to score after he singled in the fifth inning with one out, second baseman Kevin Rivera singled right after Fulmer, and then a bold double steal moved both baserunners over one base. A throwing error on the double steal allowed Fulmer to trot home from third to tie the ballgame.
The Hawks plated a run in the bottom half of the frame after Toole walked, got moved over to second base on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a fly out down the right field line, and scored on Linkous' single.
Stahel hit a leadoff home run in the bottom half of the eighth inning to grant Boise the 4-2 lead. Riggs then struck out three straight batters after walking first baseman Jacob Bosiokovic in the same inning.
The Volcanoes couldn't get a ninth inning rally going as their three-game winning streak was snapped with the 4-2 loss.
Salem-Keizer faces off against the Hawks in the Wednesday night rubber match at 6:15 p.m. PDT in Boise.
