Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Volcanoes Stadium - Keizer, OR) - Canadians RHP Gabriel Ponce and LHP Randy Pondler both struggled against the potent Salem-Keizer offense as the South Division leading Volcanoes pounded Vancouver for 19 hits that produced 13 runs as the C's dropped a fifth consecutive game 13-3 on Friday night. The loss drops Vancouver to 5-17 (.228) through the first 22 games of the season.
Ponce went two innings allowing six hits as he got tagged for five runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning with Volcanoes SS Simon Whiteman smacking a two-run double to cap off the barrage of early offense. All five of Ponce's runs were earned.
LHP Randy Pondler was next up for Salem's bats and they went right back to work scoring four more in the bottom of the 3rd inning and three more in the 4th innings - all off Pondler who gave up two-run singles to Volcanoes 3B Sean Roby in both innings. Pondler would exit with two outs in the 4th allowed seven earned runs.
It was Canadians RHP Andy McGuire who finally found the key to locking up Salem's offense as the righty went 3 1/3 innings scattering just two hits throwing three straight scoreless innings up on the board to finally bring the game back from the stratosphere.
Vancouver's first run was a special one with C Philip Clarke hitting his first professional home run in just his 3rd at-bat of Friday's game. Clarke joined the Canadians earlier in the day after helping Vanderbilt University win the 2019 NCA College World Series.
The C's would rally for a pair of runs in the 9th inning with SS Tanner Morris grabbing an RBI single to take a little momentum into Saturday's series finale set for 6:35pm. The game can be heard live on Sportsnet 650.
Vancouver Canadians Baseball returns to historic Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Sunday, July 7th with a special 5:05pm start time as they face the Everett Aquasox through Tuesday, July 9th. Tickets to all three games can be purchased by calling 604.872.5232, on-line at www.canadiansbaseball.com or by visiting the Nat Bailey Stadium Box Office at 4601 Ontario Street, Vancouver, B.C.
