Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - Bakersfield (50-37, 13-4) completed an improbable come-back on Saturday night against the Visalia Rawhide (53-34, 7-10) by scoring seven runs in the ninth inning and holding on for a 9-7 win at Recreation Ballpark.
A combination of three pitchers in the ninth for Visalia could not stop the bleeding as the Blaze sent 13 men to the plate and scored seven runs, tying the most Visalia has given up in any inning this season, on five hits, three walks, two errors, a sacrifice fly and an RBI fielder's choice.
The game was well in hand for Visalia after 1B Marty Herum gave the Rawhide a 2-0 lead in the third inning against Blaze RHP Osmer Morales. After a walk and a fielder's choice, CF Zach Nehrir singled and two batters later Herum drove Nehrir and LF Victor Reyes in with a double for the lead.
Bakersfield, against LHP Alex Young, hit solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to draw even at 2-2 with 2B Gianfrancoe Wawoe hitting his fourth and C Daniel Torres hitting his first.
Reyes, in the fifth, left the building for his fourth of the season and that reclaimed the lead for the Rawhide 3-2.
Young pitched 5.1 innings and left with one out in the sixth and a man on first base. His final line was five hits allowed, two runs (earned), two home runs, he walked two and struck out four. LHP Gabriel Moya entered and ended the inning, preserving the 3-2 Rawhide lead.
Morales pitched six innings and ended up giving up five hits and three runs (earned) on a walk and six strikeouts.
The Rawhide in the seventh greeted RHP Isaac Sanchez rudely with four straight hits, including an RBI double by RF Stryker Trahan and a Reyes RBI single. Trahan himself scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-2 Visalia.
Sanchez began the eighth but was lifted after giving up three straights with 2B Henry Castillo driving in a run to make it 7-2 Visalia heading to the ninth. RHP Darin Gillies (2-0, 3.60) finished the eighth in relief of Sanchez and earned the win in relief.
RHP Cameron Gann, who finished the eighth inning for Visalia began the ninth and allowed the first three men to reach base, including back-to-back RBI doubles and then got CF Braden Bishop to hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-4 ball game. RHP Bud Jeter (7-1, 2.68) came in and all five men he faced reached base and then RHP Jency Solis faced four men and two of those reached base safely to cap the inning.
LHP Jacob Zokan (SV: 3) pitched a perfect ninth to complete the comeback win for Bakersfield.
The four game series continues tomorrow night with a 6 p.m. first pitch from Rawhide Ballpark. Visalia will send RHP Joel Payamps (2-1, 3.20) to the mound for his fifth start of the season against RHP Zach Littell (1-0, 0.00). Tomorrow is Lions Night and the Rawhide will be in special Lions Night jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game and it's a Family Fun Sunday presented by Carl's Jr.
