Calgary Vipers News Release

CHICO, CA - The Calgary Vipers let an early lead slip away, then after falling behind 5-2 scored six unanswered runs between the 5th and 9th inning to down the Chico Outlaws 8-5 Thursday night and take the rubber match of the three-game series played at Nettleton Stadium.

Calgary got on the board in the 1st inning when Nelson Castro doubled off Chico starter Jason Roach and scored on Drew Miller's line single to center. The Vipers pushed their lead to 2-0 when Jorge Mejia's sacrifice fly scored Jorge Tang from third...but the Outlaws tied up the contest in their half of the 2nd with a pair of two-out RBI hits - Shane Cronin's double off the center field chased Lino Garcia home...Matt Ceriani then followed with a base hit to knock in Cronin. Chico used an unlikely source to play long ball in the 3rd and take the lead - with Steve Boggs aboard, Eric Pringle bombed a homer over the right field wall to make the score 4-2...then in the 4th Ceriani scored from second when Castro, trying to turn a double play, threw the ball away at first, upping the Outlaws lead to 5-2.

From then on, it was all Vipers - Calgary plated a pair in the 5th on a Colin Moro solo homer and a Miller sacrifice fly...then in the 6th the Vipers took a 6-5 lead - Moro's RBI single tied the score; later in the inning Travis Drader would score when Outlaws second baseman Jesse Kovacs threw the ball away at second trying to start a double play. While Calgary relievers Joe Sergent, Jon Huizinga and P.J. Bevis kept Chico's offense in check the rest of the way, the Vipers tacked on insurance runs in the 8th and 9th to complete the scoring and give Calgary the win - the Vipers eighth in their last 10 games.

Calgary starter Evan Greusel (4-0) worked five innings and got credit for the win, with Chico reliever Rob Ellis (2-1) absorbing the loss. The Vipers had 13 hits on the night, with Moro, Tang, Patrick Arlis and Darryl Brinkley chipping in with two safeties apiece...Cronin went 3-for-4 to lead the Outlaws nine hit attack. Thursday's loss dropped Chico to 7-15 on the year, while Calgary improved to 15-7 for the season. The Outlaws welcome the Edmonton Cracker Cats to Nettleton Stadium Friday for the first of a three-game weekend series...left-hander Trevor Caughey (1-1) will start for Chico in the opener. Game time is 7:05pm ...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 6:40pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or AM 1340. The broadcast will also be streamed live on the internet through the Outlaws official website, www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
