
Vipers Bullpen Shuts Door for Series Victory

The Calgary Vipers scored six unanswered runs to defeated the Chico Outlaws 8-5 at Nettleton Stadium in Chico, California. The Snakes trailed 5-2 after four innings but got four shutout innings from their bullpen to allow the offence to respond and pick up the series victory. Newcomer Joe Sergent was great going two and two-third innings while Jon Huizinga and P.J. Bevis combined for the final inning and a third to hand starter Evan Greusel his fourth win of the season. Calgary is now 15-7 on the season and has won four straight series'.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on a Nelson Castro double and a Drew Miller RBI single.
The lead was doubled in the top of the second inning with the Snakes loading the bases on singles from Jorge Tang and Travis Drader and a walk to Colin Moro. Jorge Mejia made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Chico tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Julian Benavidez walked and Lino Garcia reached on a fielder's choice which was almost a double play but a bobble by shortstop Castro extended the inning with two outs. Shane Cronin followed with a RBI double and Matt Ceriani knotted the game at two with a RBI base hit.
The Outlaws grabbed the lead an inning later in the third with a Steve Boggs single and a Eric Pringle two run homerun for the 4-2 advantage.
A run was added in the bottom of the fourth inning as Ceriani walked and Jesse Kovacs singled to put two runners on. Pringle reached on a fielder's choice and on the same play Castro threw the double-play throw away allowing Ceriani to score for the 5-2 lead.
Moro smacked his first professional homerun in the top of the fifth inning and was followed by Mejia with a bunt single, Castro being hit by pitch, and Darryl Brinkley singling to load the bases. Miller brought Calgary within one run at 5-4 with a sacrifice fly.
The Vipers retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning as Patrick Arlis singled, Tang reached on a fielder's choice, and Drader walked to put two runners on base. Moro tied the game with a RBI single and Mejia reached on a fielder's choice. On the same play the runners were on the move and Drader scored for the 6-5 advantage on a throwing error by second baseman Kovacs trying to get Tang at second base.
A run was added in the top of the eighth inning as Drader reached on a wild pitch strikeout and Moro reached base with an error by third baseman Jose Valdez on his sacrifice bunt. After a Mejia walk to load the bases, Brinkley made the score 7-5 with an RBI base hit.
One more insurance run was added in the top of the ninth inning as Arlis doubled and Tang singled to put runners at the corners. Tang followed by stealing second base and the catcher Cronin's throw to second got away to allow Arlis to score for the 8-5 advantage.
Greusel (4-0) went five innings and gave up four earned runs to now lead the Vipers' pitching staff in victories. Bevis (1-0-1) notched the save with a perfect ninth inning two days after recording his first victory. Rob Ellis (2-1) took the loss a night after picking up a win.
Jose, Mejia, and Miller extending their hitting streaks to 16, 12, and 11 games respectively. Mejia and Miller also both reached base for the 22nd game consecutively to start the season.
The Vipers now take on the Reno Silver Sox for the first time in franchise history Friday June 20th at 8:05 PM (MDT) with Jordy Alexander (3-1) starting. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday June 21st starting at 6:05 PM (MDT) to wrap up the three game series. Reggie Rivard (1-0) will start the first game and the newest Snake Ryan Schurman (0-0) starts game two. All games can be heard live online at www.calgaryvipers.com.
Calgary returns home Tuesday June 24th to open up a six day home stand against the Reno Silver Sox and the Long Beach Armada. Both teams are making their first appearance at Foothills Stadium. Tickets can be ordered by calling 277-BALL (2255).
