Vipers Set New Franchise Record

The Calgary Vipers set a new franchise record for consecutive losses at ten with a 15-5 thumping at the hands of the Edmonton Capitals before 1431 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers had an early four run lead erased and committed four errors along the way as the Capitals scored 14 unanswered runs to finish off the game. With the loss the Snakes record dropped to 20-18 on the Golden Baseball League season with five games remaining in the first half.

Dusty Gober (4-1) received his first loss of the season after giving up six runs in five and a third innings.

With two outs in the top of the first inning Larry Bigbie hit a solo home run for a 1-0 Capitals lead.

Calgary responded in the bottom of the frame as Jorge Mejia and Brent Metheny singled, Mejia stole third base and scored on a wild pitch, Drew Miller was hit by a pitch, Caonabo Cosme doubled in a Metheny and Miller tallied when the ball was bobbled in left field for and error and a 3-1 advantage.

The Vipers added to their lead in the third when Kevin Price launched his fourth big fly of the season, Miller doubled, Cosme singled, and Miller scored when on a groundout for a 5-1 score.

Edmonton made the game 5-4 in the next half inning as Bigbie, Cliff Brumbaugh, and Matt Rogelstad all singled to load the bases, Steve Brown plated a run with a fielder's choice, Alex Prieto singled in one, and Nick Valdez hit a sacrifice fly to cap the three-run frame.

The Capitals went ahead 8-5 in the sixth frame when Rogelstad and Prieto singled, Valdez walked to load the bases, Enrique Cruz hit a sacrifice fly, Ryan Stevenson singled in two, and he scored when Mejia committed a throwing error to allow a fourth run to score.

In the top of the eighth Edmonton added to the lead as Jesse Oster walked, Stevenson reached on an error, Bigbie was intentionally walked to load the bases, Brumbaugh knocked in two with a base hit, and Brown cashed in a third of the inning with a base knock for a 11-5 advantage.

The onslaught continue in the ninth inning as the Capitals took a 15-5 lead when Valdez walked, Alex Chavez singled, Bigbie knocked in one with a base hit, and Brumbaugh launched a three run shot for a four run frame.

The Vipers now embark on a seven day road trip which will see them play six games starting in Orange County on Tuesday July 6th, Wednesday July 7th, and Thursday July 8th all at 8:05 PM MDT the Snakes take on the Flyers. Calgary concludes the road swing on Friday July 9th at 7:05 PM MDT and a double-header Saturday July 10th at 4:05 PM MDT against the St. George RoadRunners.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting 2 to 1 Clinics for Ages 8-14 on Monday July 12th, Tuesday July 13th, and Wednesday July 14th from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM MDT. Each participant will be paired up with another child and one of the Vipers players for two hours of individual instruction and a live one hour game.
