Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Playing the fourth game of a five-game set against the Tijuana Cimarrones on Saturday night, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park in search of their seventh win in the last eight games. Giving the start to left-hander Jino Gonzalez (0-4), the Seals squared off against Jose Nieto (0-2) on the mound for Tijuana.
Grabbing another first-inning lead against the Seals, the Cimarrones opened the scoring when a single from lead-off batter Eric Scriven set up an RBI double off the bat of Mark Samuelson for a 1-0 lead.
Bouncing back with two of their own in the bottom of the frame, the Seals took the lead when Wilver Perez turned a base hit into a tie game after stealing both second and third and scoring on a Dale Swinford groundout. That came before a solo home run for Josh Arhart, his third in as many games, put Victoria on top by a 2-1 margin.
The Seals then added to their lead in the second inning, using a run-scoring single from Gonzalez along with an RBI base hit from Dale Swinford to take a 4-1 lead into the fifth. That's when Victoria stretched their advantage to four runs on another base hit from their starting pitcher.
Polishing off a 6-1 lead in the sixth frame, the Seals used an RBI base hit from Brian Rios to cash an earlier single courtesy of Terrence McClain for a commanding advantage.
Not to be outdone, however, the Cimarrones staged a comeback in the top half of inning number seven. Taking a run on a groundout from Scriven to pull within four, Tijuana then put two more runners on base ahead of a three-run bomb from Samuelson to make it a 6-5 ball game.
Responding to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth, a single from McClain, a double off the bat of Arhart and an RBI base hit in Matt Edgecombe's Victoria debut put the Seals out front by an 8-5 margin.
Turning to closer Brandon Villafuerte in the ninth, the Seals survived a bases-loaded threat from the Cimarrones to take the fourth game of the series by an 8-5 final score.
Jino Gonzalez earned a long overdue first win of the season after a strong outing on the mound, while Jose Nieto lasted just 1.1 innings in a losing effort. Josh Arhart stretched his hit streak to eleven games with a 3-for-5 night while Gonzalez pitched in a pair of RBI's to help his own cause.
