Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Wrapping up a five-game series against the Tijuana Cimarrones, the Victoria Seals closed out the homestand with a matinee matchup on Sunday afternoon. Giving Anthony Pluta (1-0) the start, the Seals faced off against Tijuana's Ben Shockey (0-0) in the series finale.
For a fifth consecutive game it was the visiting team on the board first, as the Cimarrones jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the back of RBI singles from both Kit Pellow and Mark Samuelson in the top of the first. Answering back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, Victoria cut the deficit in half with back-to-back hits from Dale Swinford and Terrence McClain.
The Seals then took the driver's seat in the bottom of the second inning, using a hit-by-pitch to Colin Moro and a walk to Pluta to set up a two-run double courtesy of Wilver Perez to stake a 3-2 lead.
Victoria went back to work in the latter half of the third frame, grabbing a two run advantage on a single from Brian Rios before a bases-loaded walk to Matt Kavanaugh made it 5-2 Seals. With the bases still loaded after an RBI single off the bat of Pluta, Perez launched a grand slam over the left field fence to help Victoria post seven runs in the third inning and take a 10-2 lead.
Finding even more offense in the fourth inning, the Seals made it a ten-run ball game with the help of a lead-off walk to Josh Arhart, a single from Moro and a two-run double delivered by Kavanaugh.
The Cimarrones would strike back with a flurry of their own in the fifth, however, when a double from Samuelson scored a run before a two-out error to Perez opened the door for consecutive doubles from Bubba Garcia and Carlos Domingues, cashing four Tijuana runs to leave the score 12-6 in favour of Victoria.
The Seals then answered back in the bottom of inning five, scoring the lead-off run after Perez hit a single, stole his 30th base of the season and came home on a base hit from Swinford. After Rios drew a bases loaded walk to add another Victoria run, Matt Edgecombe cleared the base paths with a three-run double, lifting his team to a 17-6 advantage.
Despite allowing a single run in the sixth and seventh innings, along with a two run shot from Tijuana's Garcia in the eighth frame, the Seals closed out the five-game series in style with a 17-10 win over the Cimarrones.
A strong outing from Anthony Pluta gave the Seals starter his second win of the year, while Ben Shockey lasted just 2.1 innings in his first loss of the season. Wilver Perez was brilliant at the dish for Victoria, posting four hits and six RBI's while both Matt Edgecombe and Matt Kavanaugh both contributed three runs batted in for the Seals.
