MCALLEN, TEXAS - The NBA Development League Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Food Bank RGV, KTEX 100.3, Wild 104, The X 105.5, Hot Kiss 106.3 and Action 4 News announced today they are continuing the Hoops Against Hunger food drive into the season, offering free tickets for donations of non-perishable food items at select weekday Vipers games at Dodge Arena.

The effort began with the 135-112 win over the Albuquerque Thunderbirds on December 10.

The Vipers collected more than 2,500 pounds of food over their last 12 home games last season and continued to gather food during the off-season as well.

"Helping those in need is always priority number one, and after the enormous success of Hoops Against Hunger last season and during the off-season, we look forward to continuing to collect donations for all those in need in our communities," Vipers President Brian Michael Cooper said.

The remaining game dates are:

Monday, December 21 vs. Reno Bighorns at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, January 13 vs. Albuquerque Thunderbirds at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, January 13 vs. Albuquerque Thunderbirds at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, March 10 vs. Austin Toros at 7:30 p.m.

The Food Bank RGV, which is the fourth largest in Texas and 26th largest in the nation, distributes over 96,000 meals per week, with two-thirds of those going to children.

"In our fiscal year 2008, we distributed over 21 million pounds of food. Last fiscal year we distributed over 25 million pounds of food to 328,000 families. It's hard to imagine how we are feeding a lot more families than we did after [Hurricane] Dolly's aftermath," Food and Fund Drive Manager Carter Robinson said.

On Monday the Vipers are hosting high school football awards night. The winners, as chosen by The Monitor and Freedom Newspapers Valley-Wide, will be honored at halftime. Doors open at 6:30.
