Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), at last picked up a hard-earned win and two points in the standings Saturday night as they hosted the Kalamazoo Wings and won by a final score of 4-3.

The Vipers jumped ahead to a very early lead in the match, scoring four goals on Joel Martin in the first 10:33 of play. Alex Jerofejevs got the scoring started as he put goal number one on the scoreboard at the 4:19 mark off assists from Petr Jelinek and Steve Crusco with a Vipers man-advantage. With another Roanoke power play just three and a half minutes later, Jelinek tallied one of his own at 7:46 with assists from L.P. Martin and Mike Wiggins. The momentum continued to trickle down, as Martin would score unassisted at 8:36 and again with the help of Jonathan Charette at 10:33.

Shawn Conschafter kept the K-Wings off the board until Tyler Willis scored at 3:32 of the second period. The score would remain 4-1 and the Wings would remain silent until Lee Ruff and Willis made it interesting, scoring back-to-back goals at 18:16 and 18:50 of the third period. Conschafter and the Vipers held on, however, and took a much-needed and much-deserved win from Kalamazoo. Conschafter faced 10 Wings shots in the first period and 15 in each the second and the third, making a total of 37 saves to help the Vipers earn a victory.

The Vipers gain sole possession of third place with the win, as the Richmond RiverDogs were defeated by the Muskegon Fury. They will take a week off and then head to Richmond on Friday, January 13th as they battle to hold onto third place. They'll be back in Roanoke on Saturday, January 14th to host the RiverDogs, and will then host the Danbury Trashers on Wednesday, January 18th.
