Vipers Fall to IceHogs 7-3
March 12, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), played hard but could not keep their momentum going after last night's 5-3 victory over the Richmond Riverdogs as they hosted and fell to the UHL's top team, the Rockford IceHogs 7-3 Sunday at the Roanoke Civic Center.
The IceHogs opened up scoring with three straight goals in the second period after an unusually quiet first period, during which the two teams combined for just six shots, only one coming off the stick of a Viper. Sean Starke got the Vipers on the board at the twelve-minute mark of the second period off assists from David Beauregard and Travis Smith before Rockford would score again to make it a 4-1 game after two.
Smith began the third period with his second goal in as many nights for the Vipers, which have been his first and second of the season. Beauregard and Jan Jas were credited with assists on Smith's power play goal, which came at 2:41. Yannick Tifu, who scored a hat trick on Jamie Hodson the last time the two teams met, scored a fifth goal for the Ice Hogs at the 5:12 mark. Starke answered with his second of the night with an assist from fellow-newcomer to the Vipers, Matt Elich at 8:00.
Rockford's Greg Barber answered with his second and third of the night at 10:36 and 17:34 for the hat trick to make it a 7-3 IceHogs final.
The Vipers record falls to 14-37-6 with the loss as they get ready for a short three-game road trip before their next home game on Sunday, March 19th as the Danbury Trashers come to town. Call the Vipers office today at (540) 345-PUCK (7825) to get your tickets. Come out and greet new Vipers Simon Rizk and Sean Starke as they square off with the Trashers' Carlyle Lewis and Brad Wingfield! Don't miss a minute of the action - good seats are going fast!
