Vipers Edge Mad Ants at 2011 NBA D-League Showcase

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS, Jan. 10, 2011 - If NBA potential was measured with a stethoscope, Jeff Adrien would be an All-Star and not just the standout performer from Day One of the 2011 NBA D-League Showcase.

Adrien, who made Golden State's opening night roster and appeared in 15 games before being waived in December, finished with 30 points on 12-for-15 shooting to go with 12 rebounds as the Rio Grande Valley Vipers defeated the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, 100-97.

Though not blessed with ideal height (6-7) to play the four in the NBA, Adrien makes a living outworking his opponents and never gives less than his best effort.

"I've opened some doors, but I just have to keep doing it each night," said Adrien, a four-year standout at Connecticut who went undrafted in 2009 before playing overseas in 2009-10. "This team has really embraced me, and it feels good to be in a place where you feel wanted."

Jerel McNeal added 21 points for the Vipers (12-7). Mustafa Shakur, who was in training camp with the New Orleans Hornets, had 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

After not scoring in the first half, Fort Wayne's Oliver Lafayette scored 17 points in the third quarter and finished with a team-high 21 points for the Mad Ants (12-8). Roderick Wilmont added 20 points, shooting 4-for-8 from behind the arc.

Both teams are back in action Wednesday with Rio Grande Valley facing off against Erie, while Fort Wayne takes on Bakersfield.
