Tucker Takes Talents to South Padre for 2011 NBA D-League Showcase

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS, Jan. 10, 2011 - Dar Tucker can jump.

The reigning D-League Dream Factory slam dunk champion, who'll participate in Wednesday night's Dunk Contest here at the D-League Showcase, rocked the rim several times in the early portion of New Mexico's game against Texas.

What he failed to show in two seasons at DePaul was the ability to consistently knock down perimeter shots, leading to his going undrafted in 2009 and spending last season in the D-League. He appears to making strides in this area, as evidenced by his 5-for-6 shooting from behind the arc on his way to a game-high 28 points for the Thunderbirds (11-9) in their 95-94 victory over the Legends.

"Dunking is what I'm known for," said Tucker, who also snatched 10 rebounds for New Mexico. "If you followed me through high school and college, that's me. I'm an athlete. God blessed me with hops. That's what I'm always going to try to do. But, I've also been trying to improve my shot and become more dangerous out there."

Joe Alexander, the eighth overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft, had 21 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks for the Legends, who were making their D-League Showcase debut under Head Coach Nancy Lieberman. It's been a struggle for Alexander since leaving West Virginia after his junior season, spending time with Milwaukee, Chicago and New Orleans before falling out of the NBA after only two-plus seasons.

Stephen McDowell added 25 points for the Thunderbirds, who overcame an early 16-point deficit. Justin Dentmon led Texas (9-9) with 22 points, while Sean Williams, a former first round pick of the New Jersey Nets in 2007, grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.

New Mexico plays again tomorrow against the Maine Red Claws. Texas is in action again Thursday against the Iowa Energy.
