Tulsa Tops Sioux Falls at 2011 NBA D-League Showcase

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS, Jan. 10, 2011 - Latavious Williams made a name for himself in June, becoming the first player ever drafted into the NBA straight from the D-League, having not played in college. Today, he was busy furthering his reputation as one of the more intriguing prospects at the 2011 NBA Development League Showcase, which got underway today from South Padre Island, Texas.
Williams, who was drafted by the Miami Heat with the 48th overall pick of the 2010 NBA Draft then had his rights traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Tulsa 66ers, who trailed 52-43 at the half, rallied for a 103-83 win over the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the Showcase's opening tilt.
"I think I have a better feel for things this year" said Williams, who shot 7-for-10 from the field, while also grabbing six offensive rebounds. "Last year, it all came at me kind of fast. This year, things are slowing down for me out there, and I'm trying to make the most of this situation."
Oklahoma City, which also owns and operates the Tulsa 66ers, was able to retain Williams' rights by not signing him and cutting him in training camp. The team will continue to monitor his development in the hopes of eventually giving him a chance to earn a roster spot with the parent club.
Dexter Pittman, on assignment from the Miami Heat, had a strong game for Sioux Falls (2-15) with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Pittman, who lost nearly 100 pounds at Texas on his way to becoming a player worthy of being drafted with the 32nd overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, has made the most of his time in the D-League, averaging close to 16 points and nine rebounds in 11 games.
Brandon Brooks had 16 points and Larry Owens added 14 points and four assists for Tulsa (16-6), which plays again Wednesday against Dakota. Sean Marshall scored 16 points and Anthony Harris added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Sioux Falls, which plays again Thursday against Reno.
